Instructions for H. pylori Breath Test

You are scheduled for a breath test to identify if the H.pylori bacteria have been completely eradicated after your antibiotic treatment. This appointment should be scheduled for four weeks after completion of the antibiotics. Please plan for a 30 minute visit.

On the day of your visit you will drink a specialized solution that contains a substance that is broken down by the H.pylori bacterium. The breakdown products can be detected in a person's breath.

It is very important that you follow these instructions for the breath test to be considered effective.

1. Do not take any antibiotics for 2 weeks prior to your visit.

2. Do not take Prilosec (omeprazole), Aciphex (rabeprazole), Nexium (esomeprazole), Protonix (pantoprazole), or Prevacid (Iansoprazole) for 2 weeks prior to your visit.

3. Do not eat or drink for one hour prior to your visit.
